The
Gold Rush Chapter of the US Army Warrant Officers Association
has brought our vision to reality. We have built a memorial in
the lobby of the California National Guard’s Joint Forces
Headquarters building to honor the Soldiers and Airmen of the
California National Guard killed in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other
locations in the War on Terror since 9/11.
The
memorial includes a 52" LCD screen that displays a memorial
presentation; each slide includes a Soldier or Airman’s
photograph and biography. Additional slides present
descriptions of the Purple Heart, the Battlefield Cross, and
Burial Flag. The photos and biographies rotate while narrators
read the biographies. The audio can only be heard from the
immediate area. The memorial includes a touch panel podium so
that family members and others can call-up any display at the
touch of the screen. The color scheme is purple to match the
Purple Heart.
The
also includes a granite wall with each fallen Heroes name and
relevant dates; a "Battlefield Cross" (bronze boots, helmet, and
upside down rifle display); remembrance book, and an American
flag that was flown over the State Capital. The overall project
cost us approximately $25,000. The unveiling ceremony was held
on 4 December 2007.
